Shea Butter
Shea butter is produced from shea nuts, found on trees native to West Africa. UGF/CDN produces both organic and conventional shea butter; the organic shea butter is certified by ECOCERT. UGF/CDN products are also certified fairtrade by ESR and FAIRTRADE (organisations responsible for promoting fair trade).
Shea butter is used in a diverse range of product, including cosmetics, medicine, and food. Since 2003, UGF/CDN has been regularly exporting Shea butter to L’OCCITANE (based in Provence, France). UGF/CDN’s production capacities for shea butter are:150 tonnes of conventional shea butter a year, and 50 tonnes of organic shea butter. In 2011, L’OCCITANE ordered 40 tonnes of shea butter, and TERRE D’OC ordered 400kg.
UGF/CDN is one of the leading producers of Shea butter in Burkina Faso. The production of the butter employs 851 women, of which 515 are responsible for collecting shea nuts, and 336 are involved in the creation of the butter.
Stages of shea butter production
1. Washing
The nuts are washed with hot water, then rinsed
2. Drying
After being washed, the nuts are spread out to dry well
3. Crushing
The shea nuts are then broken down into much smaller pieces
4. Roasting
The nuts are then roasted
5. Grinding
The roasted nuts are ground to extract the nut paste
6. Churning
Once the paste has been extracted, it is churned by hand, until it whitens
7. Cooking
The white paste is then transferred into large pots and cooked above a fire, in order to get the shea butter
8. Filtering
The butter is then filtered mechanically to remove any debris
9. Packaging
The butter is packaged in biodegradable plastic bags, and then packed into 25 kilo boxes
Sales
Conventional shea butter: €1.96 or 1286 FCFA per kilogram
Organic shea butter: €3.04 or 2000 FCFA per kilogram
